Battle at Baywood 2 Write-up

Battle at Baywood 2 was a competition filled with ups and downs for myself.  The day started off great, lovely weather outside and a large turnout of competitors.  As the rules began, we found out that the order was going to be switched and my group would start the day with the car deadlift instead of the Viking press.  This threw me off because the deadlift is never first.  The pressing event is usually first and that allows you to really get your body loose before jumping into a massive deadlift.  Either way, it had to be done so I had to get ready for the deadlift.

Being the last person to go, I was able to see what every other competitor did first.  the number to beat was 11 reps.  I began cranking the reps out during my turn.  but then, I started feeling fatigued and began taking some breaks and not forcing myself to push harder.  I came in 2nd place with 9 reps.  Looking at it, I did not go into this event with the same intensity that I have during training, there definitely was more left in the tank but for whatever reason, I did not leave it all on the table.

The 2nd event was the Viking press.  Again I was the last person to go and knew that I needed to rep the weight out since the number to beat was 16 (or somewhere around there).  Sadly, I ended up with 9 reps which was good enough for 4th place.  Mind you, there were 8 people overall in this heavyweight class.  Not a great placing for this event but it was a PR so I will take it.

The 3rd event was the Conan's wheel.  I have never picked a Conan's wheel up before so I was unsure how I was going to do.  Everyone who went before me had a pretty hard job with it, the furthest person made it about 1.5 rotations.  When I first picked the weight up, I leaned back too far and made a few steps backwards before dropping the weight.  We had 1 mulligan to get used to the weight so it was ok.  I then picked it back up and made it around over 1.5 times, taking 1st place in the event and moving into first place overall after 3 events.

The 4th event was the keg toss.  For some reason, I decided to change what I am used to.  I completely choked on this event and took 7th place, knocking me down from 1st overall to 3rd going into the final event.  I knew that there was now 0% chance of me winning but I needed to place.  The person in 4th place was only behind me by a point, so it was him vs myself, winner takes 3rd place.  The final event, keg carry and load over bar, the person in 4th ended up with 16 seconds, a very good time.  It was my turn and I came up short, finishing the 3 kegs in 20secs, officially knocking me out of the top 3.

This competition did not turn out the way I wanted it to but I definitely learned more about myself and competing.  Every time you go out there and compete, you learn something and now I learned that my times events need work, I NEED to pick up my speed.

Next up for me is Shreveport's Strongest Man on May 24th.  I will be flying down to Louisiana and competing against some of the best amateur strongmen around.  This will be a benchmark to see really where I am vs everyone else.

I would like to thank my sponsor, The Protein Bakery, for all of their support.  Their protein packed brownies, blondies, and cookies really help me recover from my grueling workouts and to go back at it again.  Check them out at proteinbakery.com
