Oil Region's Strongest Man write up

This has been a very busy and very taxing 2 weeks on my body.  This last Saturday (the 3rd) was Oil Region's Strongest Man V in Oil City, PA.  In my opinion, one of my top competitions overall.  I could really see from looking at how i did in each event and notice in the videos that I have been consistently getting better.  A lot better especially over these last 2 months.

Event 1 was the max axel clean and press.  I knew this event would be not one of my best.  I opened at 240 because I am never good on the axel clean.  Lift was easy.  For my second attempt, i jumped to 270lbs, clean was hard but the press i thought was easy.  3rd and final attempt was 290lbs.  Clean was actually easier than the 270 but I failed on the press.  I did hit a PR on the 290 clean though so that was a good thing.  My issue with doing axel clean is I try to power clean the weight instead of continental clean it.  Just something i need to get better at.

Second event was the frame deadlift for reps.  650lb frame for as many reps as possible.  The number to beat was 17.  Once my time started, I began just repping them out.  The hard part about this event was the up and down call, the up call was delayed which did not help.  Through the first 30 seconds, I was flying with 9 reps but then I started to taper off.  I ended with 15 reps.  HUGE PR for me, but looking at the video, I started taking 1 second breaks here and there.  If i just pushed harder and did not take those breaks, I could have one the event.

The 3rd event was yoke carry.  Carry a 800lb yoke 50 ft.  The time to beat was 16 seconds.  Halfway through the course, I dropped the yoke twice so I knew i was not going to win the time.  I carried it about 40 ft and once i dropped it a 3rd time, decided to stop the event and conserve my energy for the next event since i knew even if i finished the 50ft, i would still only be 2nd place for the event.

4th event was farmers carry.  320lbs per hand for 50 ft.  I won that event easily.  I am not sure of the exact time but i think it was around 12 seconds.

last event was my dreaded enemy, atlas stones.  Going into this event, i was guaranteed 2nd place so I tried to get the 330lb stone over the 48inch bar first, that would have been a PR for me.  Did not happen.  So I went for the 300lb stone and managed 1 rep.  Horrible performance compared to the LW231 class who had people repping the 370 stone!  This is my kryptonite.  If i am to ever get better in this sport and move on, I need to be more well rounded and be able to load heavy stones.

But a second place finish overall was great in my eyes,.  Not the first I was hoping for but 2 competitions in 2 weeks and both 2nd place finishes, my best 2 competition performances back to back ever.  Monday morning I was right back at it.  The only way to keep getting better is to keep working hard and keep pushing yourself, and that is what I am doing.
